IC Sensors

IC sensors, also known as integrated circuit temperature sensors, are two-terminal temperature transducers that create output current. They produce linear analog voltage that is proportional to absolute temperature. The typical temperature range is around 55°C to 150°C. IC sensors come in small packages. They have fast response time and low thermal mass.

IC temperature sensors are low cost, highly functional, and do not need additional circuitry for digital or current and direct voltage output. They have digital & analog outputs and several communication interfaces.

IC sensors are used for various applications, including the following:

  • Industrial immersion
  • For monitoring and controlling temperature on circuit boards
  • Telecommunications applications (PDAs and mobile phones)
  • For controlling the CPU temperature in computer systems.

IC sensors, particularly the digital ones, are preferred over thermistors, RTDs, thermocouples and other similar technologies because of their unique characteristics. They don’t need circuitry or linearization and they are more cost-efficient than most other options.

Integrated circuit temperature sensors can also be of the immersion variety. These immersion IC sensors are placed in a metallic tube. They are ideal for appliance temperature applications, automotive & industrial engine oil temperature measurement, HVAC, and air intake temperature applications.

What are sensors?

Sensors are devices that detects optical and electrical signals. They are capable of transforming physical parameters into signals.

Types

There are three types of IC sensors: digital output, current output, and voltage output.

  • Digital output IC sensors are readily equipped with built-in A-D Converters. Their resolution is provided by the A-D Converter’s number of digits.
  • Current output IC sensors’ nominal output is at 298 µA at 25°C
  • Voltage output IC sensors have less than 1°C non-linearity. Voltage output IC sensors also do not use negative power supply.
