Image Sensors
Image sensors are electronic devices used to convert optical images into electronic signals. They allow digital and analog electronic imaging devices to function.
The image sensor is a modern technology. It has been developed through the years, starting with Bell Laboratories in 1969, when it utilized charge-coupled devices for digital cameras. Charged-coupled devices are imaging sensors created by Willard Boyle and George Smith.

In 1973, Kodak created the first commercial digital camera. Although it didn’t break into the mass market, it paved the way for more manufacturers to develop image sensors. The Cromemco Cyclops, which has a 32x32 MOS image sensor, became the first market-recognized commercial all-digital camera. It came out two years after Kodak’s camera.
Nowadays, image sensors are silicon-based and come in small packages. Aside from digital cameras, they are used in webcams, mobile phones, scanners, thermal imaging devices, medical imaging tools, night vision tools, and camera modules. Image sensors are used in a wide range of industries and application. Even NASA uses it for their IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) spacecraft.
Types
There are two types of image sensors: CMOS Sensors and CCD Sensors.
- CMOS sensors or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductors have pixels with a photodiode and a CMOS transistor switch, which significantly improves pixel signals. These sensors are typically used for small consumer products. Battery-powered devices that use CMOS sensors have low power consumption, which makes them more affordable than CCD sensors. Using conventional manufacturing processes, the components of CMOS sensors can be put together in a single chip.
- CCD sensors or Charge-Coupled Devices, were created by Willard Boyle and George E. Smith in 1969. Both men worked with AT&T Bell Labs at that time. CCD image sensors allow distortion-free charging across the chip. This results in the production of light sensitive and high-quality sensors.
