Digital Signal Controllers - DSC

Digital signal controllers (DSCs) are a combination of digital signal processor (DSP) and microcontroller. These self-contained systems allow seamless integration even at a reduced power consumption. DSCs are equipped with a processor, control-oriented peripherals, and memory. They guarantee high speed interrupt responses. Digital signal controllers are housed in a single chip.

DCSs are ideal for creating easy-to-design, low cost, and fast solutions because they are capable of replacing traditional analog circuitry with digital signal processing. Digital filters replace analog filters and complex digital control algorithms. Simpler motor types, on the other hand, replace complex universal motors. All these result in less cost and improved design.

Another significant characteristic of digital signal controllers is that they are typically programmed in C++ programming language. However, they can also be programmed using the device’s native assembly language.

DSCs are similar to DSPs in the sense that they also have barrel shifters, large accumulators, and single cycle multiply-and-accumulate MAC instructions.

Digital signal controllers are essential for a variety of applications but are more common in sensor processing, power conversion, and motor control. They are also used for digital power, speech, and audio applications. DSCs are often regarded as green technology products.
