Touch Screen Controllers
Touch screen controllers are found between the CPU or system controller and the touch sensor. They are control circuits that serve as the interface between a device and a touch screen sensor. Basically, what these controllers do is decode touch commands into actions. Example is tapping on an icon or pinching the screen using fingers.
All touch screen devices are equipped with touch screen controllers. Laptops, tablets, smartphones, smart boards, digital signage applications, and ATMs (automated teller machines) are some of the devices that use touch screen controllers. Point-of-Sale or POS kiosks/applications also use touch screen controllers.
Some gadgets need a pen stylus for users to input the touch screen commands. The touch screen is scanned only when the stylus is used on it and not when the user touches the screen with a finger (as is the usual).
Touch screen sensors
Touch screen controllers connect into touch screen sensors. It is the panel found in touch screen devices that determine or “sense” the user’s touch commands. These sensors then pass on the position/location information to the processor. Their transparent surface allows them to efficiently identify a user’s inputs. Thus, they take the place of the mouse and keyboard.
Types of touch screen sensors
There are two types of touch screen sensors for touch screen controllers: resistive and capacitive.
- Resistive touch screen sensors use pressure to sense touch commands. Despite their thin film, they create electrically resistive layers.
- Capacitive touch screen sensors are designed using traces or PCBs (printed circuit boards) as sensors. Their panels have an indium tin oxide coating.
