Capacitors

A capacitor is an electronic component that stores both energy and electrical charge. It also releases energy, and it does so quite rapidly, in a matter of milliseconds. To better understand, imagine taking a photograph using a camera with flash. To come up with a good photo, your camera has to release a burst of light. If your flash gun has a capacitor attached to it, once charged, it will release the burst of light needed via a flash bulb.

Basic Components and Use Cases

A capacitor is made up of two conductors or plates. Between the two, you will find the dielectric, more commonly known as the insulator. There are two electrical connections or terminals. Terminals look like metal legs, the thin ones that can easily connect onto an electric circuit.

There are several use cases for capacitors, particularly in electrical circuits:

  • As filters that allow the flow of signals
  • As timing devices
  • As TV and radio tuners
  • For leveling circuit voltage
  • As substitute for batteries – although this requires using large supercapacitors that have plates

Types of Capacitors

  • The Mica capacitor has two varieties: silver and clamped, although the latter is already outdated. This capacitor uses mica sheets and is ideally used when the stable capacitors are required to have small values.
  • Dielectric capacitors have movable and fixed plates. It requires a continuously changing capacitance to be able to properly tune transistor radios, receivers, and transmitters.
  • Film capacitors are of different case styles and shapes, and varying voltages and value. Alternatively labeled as “plastic capacitors”, its applications include Teflon, polycarbonate, and polystyrene. These capacitors are ideal for AC voltage regulation. Axial lead and radial lead are the two types of film capacitors.

The polarized capacitor has two polarities: negative and positive. When using these capacitors in circuits, you must ensure that they are associated with the right polarities.

Other capacitor types are the super capacitors, electrolytic capacitors, non-polarized capacitors, leaded and surface mount capacitors, polymer capacitors, and special purpose capacitors.
