RF Modules
RF modules, also known as radio-frequency modules, are small electronic frequency devices that transmit and receive radio signals coming from two devices. These devices track and identify tags that contain electronically stored information. RF modules operate at a radio frequency that typically varies between 30KHz and 300GHz. The RF transmitter uses radio frequency and an antenna to wirelessly transmit the serial data it receives. The transmission rate is often placed from 1kbps to 10kbps. The RF receiver then receives that transmitted data using the same frequency as the transmitter.
Another vital function of radio-frequency modules is to simplify wireless communication connections in embedded systems. RF modules are often the preferred choice for the majority of applications because they do not need line of sight to transmit and receive signals.

Types
There are four types of radio frequency modules: receiver modules, transmitter modules, system on a chip modules, and transceiver modules.
Receiver modules come in two classifications: superregenerative and superheterodyne receivers.
Superregenerative receivers use amplifiers in getting modulated data from carrier waves. They have low cost, low power designs. Superheterodyne, on the other hand, receivers have fixed crystal designs that allow them to be more stable and accurate than superregenerative receivers. Receiver modules demodulate the modulated RF signals they receive.
RF transmitter modules work with microcontrollers to transmit radio waves. These waves are modulated so they can take data.
System on a chip modules, also known as SoC modules, are intended for designs that need protocol compliance processing.
Transceiver modules have receivers and transmitters. They are intended for half-duplex operations.
