Thermal management refers to the process of using heat transfer and temperature monitoring devices to remove excess heat from one area to another. A thermal management system uses modern electronic tools and processes that help control thermal energy released by heat-generating components. Techniques and Methodologies
- Convective air cooling is a cooling method that uses convection currents. Heat or warm air rises and moves away from the component. Cooler air gets in and replaces the warm air.
- Heat sinks are extremely popular and used by many in electronics. This thin metal object transfers heat released by a device into a medium. Thus, the heat is moved away from the device resulting to better temperature.
- Heat pipes move heat between two interfaces (hot and cold) using phase transition and thermal conductivity. Heat is released after the vapor travels through the heat pipe. The vapor turns back into liquid, thus releasing heat.
- Forced air cooling is when there is a positive flow (more air is driven into a system than what is being pumped out).
- Cold plates are thick metal plates equipped with flow paths that allow heat-transfer fluid to go through it. Excess electrical heat absorbed by the plates is then dissipated with the help of liquid cooling.
