Power Modules
Power modules, also known as power electronic modules, combine multiple power semiconductor devices in one package. Power modules are interconnected, integrated building blocks that function as power converters. They are highly functional despite requiring lesser external components. These packages often include gate drivers, protection, and sensing functions. Power modules are often called intelligent power modules.
These power packages paved the way for the miniaturization of electronic equipment and helped improve manufacturing. Additionally, they also function as motor power amplifiers and switchers.
Power modules lessen the parasitic elements of power semiconductor devices. Their power components are provided with a mechanical package as well.
With electric, thermal, and mechanical functions, power modules are electro thermo mechanical devices that simplify power conversion.
Power modules are used for uninterruptible power supplies, industrial motor drives, welder power supplies, embedded motor drives, and AC/DC power supplies. They are used for inverters that help power renewable energies like solar power panels, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and tidal power plants.
Levels
Power modules have five levels of intelligence, namely:
- Standard Power Modules (Level 1) – they are equipped with power bridges that carry two to seven transistors. These do not come with intelligent functions.
- Intelligent Power Modules (Level 2) or IPMs – they add gate drivers so modules can convert into an intelligent status. The bridge is made up of six transistors.
- Power Integrated Modules (Level 3) – adds power supplies for gate drives and digital circuits.
- Modular Power Subsystems (Level 4) – are similar to IPMs in function except for additional features for an adjacent circuit board or module.
- Integrated Drive Modules (Level 5), also known as IDMs – are complete drives that are equipped with an I/O board, control board, and power section. These features are combined in a one-module unit.
