Inductors
An inductor looks simple – it’s a coiled-up wire, quite similar to a resistor but uncomplicated. This coiled wire is powerful, though, because it builds up a magnetic field, which is what gives the wire its electrical properties. It is equipped with inductance, which means it opposes current flow. An inductor also adjusts polarities as it discharges. Read More
Other names used to refer to an inductor are; choke or reactor. There are several factors that determine how good an inductor is, namely:
- the coil shape
- space between turns
- number of the wire’s layers and turns
- core size
- core material permeability
Inductor Functions
Inductors have two main functions: store energy and control signals.
As mentioned above, an inductor stores magnetic energy. This is made possible because of the coil, particularly when an electric current passes through it. The magnetic field it produces then releases an electric current.
The inductor’s function is dependent on how frequent current passes through it. Since it passes DC current and blocks AC current, signals with higher frequency will not have an easy time passing through.
As for its uses, inductors are popularly utilized in telecoms equipment, power supplies, and radios. It is especially useful for preventing sudden current changes in power supplies.
Types of Inductors
There are three main types of inductors.
- Air core inductors have air as its core material. Inductance is low because of the air’s low permeability. Thus, these inductors are ideal for managing high frequencies.
- An iron core inductor, on the other hand, is equipped with iron or ferrite, which are Ferromagnetic materials. These are vital for increasing inductance as such materials have high magnetic permeability. Iron core inductors are ideal for audio equipment and low-frequency line filtering.
- Ferrite core inductors are iron oxide powder. Epoxy resin is used and mixed with the powder to form the cores. The wires are then looped over it. These inductors break easily because they are brittle. Among the three types, the ferrite core inductors are the most commonly and popularly used.
