Humidity Sensor Categories
There are two categories of humidity sensors: absolute humidity (AH) and relative humidity (RH).
- Absolute humidity calculates humidity levels without any temperature reference.
- Relative humidity, on the other hand, is measured through a comparison of the maximum level of air humidity at the same temperature and the live humidity reading where the temperature is given. In other words, RH sensors measure temperature so they identify relative humidity.
There are two types of relative humidity sensors: resistive and capacitive.
- Resistive RH sensors use tiny polymer combs that decrease and increase in size whenever there is a change in humidity.
- Capacitive RH sensors monitor the capacitance of thin metal strips using two electrodes.
