Current Sensors
Alternatively called current transformers, current sensors are devices that measure a wire’s current. Magnetic field is used to identify the current and create signals that are proportional to the current. These signals are either digital or analog. The measured current is stored inside a data acquisition system or displayed via an ammeter.
Used for AC and DC currents, these sensors allow passive measurement of current without affecting the circuit. Alternating current input produces analog, bipolar, and unipolar outputs. Direct current inputs have unipolar and digital outputs.

Current sensors use Hall Effect technology as basis, specifically closed-loop and open-loop technology.
- Closed-loop current sensors create magnetic fields that resist the field coming from the current that’s being sensed. They have coils that are responsible for producing the magnetic field.
- In open-loop current sensors, a primary current creates a magnetic flux that is measured with a Hall device. The device output is a signal intended to produce the primary current’s exact representation.
Current sensors are useful for applications that monitor motors, pumps, fans, and other electrical loads. They are used for detecting machinery faults and preventing equipment damage. Current sensors are also used in sub-metering and facility management.
Digital and Analog Current Sensors
Digital current sensors detect current that flows through the conductor. They have on/off switches that help determine if the current is running according to a user-set predetermined amperage. Digital current sensor switches can be used to relay a message to another system. Current switches integrate with NC (normally closed) or NO (normally open) switches.
Analog current sensors function like a car speedometer. They display the consumed volume or range.
