Relays
Relays are switches that electronically or electromechanically open and close circuits. These devices create magnetic fields in a coil that can manage switches capable of controlling larger currents. Thus, relays can easily switch to a larger current. When this happens, the said circuits are electrically segregated from one another. It works like some sort of an electric lever. Parts of Relays
Relays have four parts:
- frame (supports the relay parts),
- coil (wire wound on a metal coil, it creates electromagnetic fields),
- armature (responsible for closing and opening contacts), and
- contacts (the switch’s conducting part).
Types of Relays
There are different sizes and varieties of relays, but the three main types are reed, solid-state, and electromechanical relays.
- Reed relays are composed of an electromagnetic coil and a reed switch. Placed inside a glass tube containing inert gas are two metal blades or reeds that make up the switch. A closed path is created after current passes through to the coil and the contacts magnetically attract each other. These relays use only small amounts of power but can switch faster compared to larger relays. Their voltage ratings and switching current are quite low, though.
- Solid-state relays or SSRs are not equipped with any moving component, which means they are highly reliable. Compared to other relays, SSRs have higher power gains. Their required control energy is significantly lower than output power. These fast and small relays are ideal for computer transistors.
- Electromechanical relays are made of a mechanical movable contact and electromagnetic coil. These relays build a magnetic field once current passes to the coil. This field then attracts the armature or the movable contact. Contacts are retracted when there’s a spring and magnetic field. It disappears when the coils do not have power.
