Power Management ICs - PMIC

Power Management Integrated Circuits or PMICs are designed for electronic device power management system. These integrated circuits specifically control battery power, extending its life. PMICs eliminate the need for big-sized and higher-capacity batteries, which is ideal for portable devices. So, basically, Power Management Integrated Circuits help enhance the way electronic device systems utilize power.

PMICs manage devices that are essential for power conservation, power delivery, power storage or replenishment, power consumption, power monitoring, and power generation. They perform a variety of functions, including battery charging, DC-to-DC conversion, voltage scaling, power-source selection, and power sequencing, among others. PMICs have many external power sources like battery and wall outlets. They also have different internal voltages like 1.8V and 5V.

Power Management ICs typically have a power transistor, linear regulators, boost converters, and DC-to-DC converters (single or multiple-switching). Also known as PMUs or Power Management Units, these integrated circuits provide consumers the convenience they need when using their mobile devices. Be it a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, consumers want their devices to have maximum battery power so that they won’t have to keep recharging. PMICs are also used in the automotive industry, networking, consumer electronics, and telecom.

Power Management Integrated Circuits are highly-compact solid-state devices that help improve overall device design and efficiency, allowing for a faster time to market at a reasonable cost.

PMIC Classification

PMICs can be classified in two ways: high-performance and low-power.

  • High-performance PMICs are those that increase a device’s system efficiency. High-performance PMIC is suitable for FPGAs, application processors, SoCs or systems-on-chip, and all types of devices that require a lot of computation. These Power Management Integrated Circuits are essential for maximizing per watt performance.
  • Low-power PMICs combine power management and multiple power rails functions. It is suitable for devices with limited space.
