AC / DC Converters

AC/DC converters are integrated circuits used for turning AC signals into DC voltage. The conversion from AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current) is known as rectification. The rectifier is the one that transforms AC supply into DC voltage. A regulator is used for adjusting voltage levels while smoothing out the direct current is the job of reservoir capacitors.

This is how AC/DC converters typically work:

  1. AC power comes from wall outlets
  2. The converter turns the power into unregulated direct current

A transformer is typically used, but since it does not pass direct current, a rectifier is utilized to produce the DC voltage. Some AC/DC converters use a multiple-stage conversion process.

AC/DC converters are essential for:

  • Medical devices
  • Measurement equipment
  • Defense applications
  • Semiconductor manufacturing equipment
  • Industrial & process control systems
  • Consumer devices

While electricity in homes is typically AC, there are several electronic devices that require DC or direct current. Some kitchen appliances and other types of commercial products use only DC voltage.

Converting AC to DC power is safer and more efficient because the converted power has a lower voltage.

Types of Converters

There are many types of converters. They are categorized according to topologies, but the most common ones are buck-flyback and flyback. Both converters have transformers and low component count. They are also cost-efficient compared to other alternatives. Flybacks are step-up/step-down converters.

Types of AC/DC Converters

There are two types of AC/DC converters: Switching and Linear.

  • Switching AC/DC converters are a little complicated as it utilizes the SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply). However, they are smaller and lighter. Switching devices typically shift from full-on to full-off states quite quickly.
  • Linear AC/DC converters may not be ideal for temperature-sensitive products because their procedure includes processing excess power as heat. Linear devices are larger than Switching converters, but they are inexpensive and simple to use.
