FLASH
Flash is a non-volatile data storage medium utilized for electronic devices like desktop and laptop computers. It is both erasable and programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), which means it is capable of keeping data even if there is no power or when the power is turned off.
Flash memory was invented by Masuoka Fujio in the 1980s. The Japanese engineer was employed at Toshiba Corporation at that time. He was looking for an alternative technology for DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips, floppy disks, magnetic tapes, and other forms of data storage. Ariizumi Shoji, Fujio’s co-worker, thought of the memory erasure process and named the device “flash memory”.

According to Shoji, the process of deleting data one at a time on a whole chip worked like a camera flash. Its original name was “simultaneously erasable EEPROM”.
Flash is utilized in a variety of applications. It is utilized for firmware storage, as a serial flash, for long-term storage or archiving, as dynamic random access memory, and for FPGA (field-programmable gate array) configuration. Flash is also often used as a hard drive replacement, particularly for servers and personal computers.
Devices that use flash memory for data storage include USB drives, smartphones, memory cards, MP3 players, and digital cameras. Flash memory is equipped with two transistors: the control gate and the floating gate.
Types
Flash memory is categorized into two main types: NAND type and NOR type.
Both types have floating gates (MOSFETs – metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor). Their cell design is similar and is named after logic gates.
- NAND has approximately eight memory cells that are connected in a series, just like NAND gates.
- NOR is the one where every memory cell has one end linked to the source line and the other end attached to a bit line similar to a NOR gate.
