EEPROM
EEPROM stands for electrically erasable programmable read-only memory. It is a non-volatile computer memory used in electronic devices and microcontrollers. The stored information can be easily erased and then reprogrammed. Alternatively known as E2PROM, it is capable of keeping its content even if it’s not powered.
Electrically erasable programmable read-only memory is utilized in circuit boards that store small amounts of data. It also has LTO tape cartridges, which is used for storing location information.

Just like flash memory, EEPROM is a CMOS-based transistor. It has a floating gate, which it uses for holding charge. An electrically erasable programmable read-only memory has a lifespan between 10k and 100k write cycles.
EEPROMs have several functions, the most important of which are for storing programmable data like CD and VCR programming information, consumer products on user information, and digital satellite receiver control data.
In monitors, the two main functions of an EEPROM are:
- To allow a switched-on monitor to copy information and data, which the EEPROM stores to a microprocessor
- To store the monitor’s current settings so that these won’t be deleted even if the monitor is powered off
Types
There are two types of EEPROM memory: parallel and serial.
- Parallel EEPROM memory is equipped with an 8-bit-wide bus. It is capable of handling small processor applications memory. It comes with write protect and chip select pins.
- Serial EEPROM memory is a bit more complicated to manage than a Parallel EEPROM. They do not have as many pins as the Parallel ones. Moreover, the operations need to be completed in a serial manner. Since transferring data has to be done consecutively, they are significantly slower than Parallel EEPROMs.
Serial EEPROMs have five common types: 1-Wire, UNI/O, Microwire, I2C, and SPI.
Another type of EEPROM that is quite popular is flash memory, which is ideal for high density and high speed.
