Flip Flops

Flip Flops are electronic circuits equipped with two stable states. They can be utilized for storing binary data or state information. These stored data may be altered through the application of different inputs. Along with latches, flip flops play a significant role in digital electronics systems for communications, computers, and various other systems. In sequential logic, they serve as basic storage elements.

A flip flop can be edge-triggered or clocked/synchronous, or level-triggered/transparent or asynchronous. Changes in an edge-triggered flip flop happen only when they are on a negative going or positive going/single type clock edge.

Level-triggered flip flops immediately turn transparent when they are enabled.

Types of Flip Flop

The common types of flip flop are D flip flop, SR flip flop, T flip flop, and JK flip flop.

  • Aside from Clock input, the D flip flop also has Data input. Once the Clock input is triggered, the Data input and Q output are matched. A high Data input results to a high Q output, while a low Q output produces low Data input.
  • SR flip flop has a Clock input and two others that are known as Set and Reset. When the Clock input is triggered and the Set input is high, then you’ll get a high Q output. A high Reset input will give you a low Q output.
  • A T flip flop can be created through a D flip flop. This happens when the Q-bar output and the D input are directly connected to each other. The process results to an inverted Q output (Q-bar) that is then sent to the D input. So, whenever the clock is triggered, an alternating High and Low output is created.
  • JK flip flop is an SR flip flop variation. It has the J and K inputs, with the J input matching with the Set input and the K input with the Reset input.
