Zener Array Diodes

Zener Array Diodes refer to multiple Zener diodes gathered together and organized in a single surface mount package. Zener Diodes are semiconductor diodes that are created to make good use of an avalanche effect. An avalanche breakdown happens when electrons collide with other atoms resulting in the creation of pairs of hole and electrons.

Also known as Zener Diode Networks, Zener Array Diodes are pn junction devices that function in the reverse-breakdown region. This breakdown is known as the Zener effect or Zener voltage.

This is how the Zener effect works: a rapid avalanche breakdown happen as reverse voltage is applied to a diode’s pn junction. As a result, the current reverses directions, which accelerates and frees the valence electrons in the applied electric field. An avalanche is created as the freed valence electrons collide with other freed electrons. Thus, the Zener effect causes rapid current changes.

Zener diodes have many uses, the most common of which are as limiters and regulators, as well as for controlling output switch.

Zener Array Diodes are presented in different configurations with ratings that are dependent on what their applications are.

What are Array Diodes/Diode Arrays?

Array diodes are electronic components composed of multiple diodes gathered in a single semiconductor package. An array has individual diodes that can share common cathodes or anodes. Diode arrays also have various types of package, including surface mount and through hole.

Some diode arrays utilize LEDs (light emitting diodes) or photodiodes for creating different visual effects, scanning images, printing, and other similar purposes. These LED diode arrays are used in a variety of products like flashlight. Likewise, they make LED printing possible.

Uses and Applications

Zener Diodes can be used and applied in three ways:

  • As constant-voltage diodes – Zener voltage remains the same even through different Zener currents
  • As voltage detection devices – Zener diodes can easily sense Zener current
  • For voltage clipping – Zener diodes are capable of clipping electrostatic discharge and other noises.
