Schottky Diodes

Schottky diodes are semiconductor diodes created through the junction of a semiconductor with a metal. These diodes are named after Walter Hans Schottky, a German physicist with significant contributions in the fields of technology, technical physics, and semiconductor devices.

Schottky diodes can rectify current by enabling quick conducting state to blocking state transitions. With low forward voltage drops, these diodes have highly efficient systems and allow higher-speed switching. These – low forward voltage drops and fast switching efficiency and rate – are the two most important characteristics of Schottky diodes.

A voltage drop is formed when there is a minimum voltage loss on the diode terminals after current travels through the diode.

Schottky diodes control or direct current to forward directions if the applied forward voltage is sufficient.

Unlike PN junction devices that combines an n-type (negative) and p-type (positive) to create a PN junction, Schottky diodes need only P-type semiconductors like platinum or aluminum.

Schottky diodes are used for a variety of applications, such as the following:

  • Power rectifiers
  • Solar cells
  • Radio frequency mixer/detector diodes
  • Clamp diode applications
  • Reverse current and discharge protection
  • Voltage clamping
  • Sample-and-hold circuits
  • Charge control
  • Switched-mode power supplies

Schottky diodes are known by several other names. They are also called as Schottky barrier diodes, hot carrier diodes, hot electron diodes, majority carrier devices, and surface barrier diodes.

Features

The following are the common features of Schottky diodes:

  1. No charge stored
    Schottky diodes do not have holes in their metals, so no charge is stored. Thus, these diodes can conveniently and efficiently switch compared to other diodes.
  2. Unipolar
    Schottky diodes are unipolar devices because there is no current flow from the metal to the N-type semiconductor.
  3. 0.2 – 0.25 V Barrier Potential
    Schottky diodes have significantly lower barrier potentials, specifically when compared to the 0.7V of P-N diodes.
