DC/DC, or DC to DC, converters are essential for laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic devices that are powered mainly by batteries. These electromechanical devices or electronic circuits convert one direct current (DC) voltage level to another. DC-DC power levels can either be very low or very high. There are DC/DC converters created for output voltage regulation. There are also DC to DC converters known as power optimizers; circuits that work to maximize wind turbines and photovoltaic systems’ energy harvest. DC/DC Converter Technologies
Switched-Capacitor DC/DC Converters and Standard Inductor-Based DC/DC Converters are the two primary DC to DC converter technologies.
- Switched-Capacitor DC/DC Converters are those that depend on linking capacitors to the output and input. Although they are executed with on-die capacitors, this is not enough to produce the same amount or level of current as inductor-based options.
- Standard Inductor-Based DC/DC Converters produce direct current output level using a capacitor and external inductor.
Usage of DC to DC converters can be based on these four modes: Boost, Bypass, Buck, and Combination.
- Boost Mode – input voltage is low, output voltage is significantly higher
- Bypass Mode – input voltage goes straight to the output
- Buck Mode – the opposite of Boost Mode; low output voltage and higher input voltage
- Combination Mode – no matter what the input voltage is, the right output voltage is automatically provided
In some cases, a combination of two modes is possible, like in battery-dependent applications. These apps are in the Buck-Boost Mode; when charging the battery, the battery voltage can go higher than the load circuitry’s required voltage. Once the battery loses power or is discharged, its voltage goes down, below the required load circuitry level.
