There are potentiometers with just two terminals – the wiper and the other end, and they function as rheostats or variable resistors.
Potentiometers are passive devices, which mean they can function without additional circuits or power supply. These variable resistors are essential for controlling a radio’s audio volume. They are also used in medical wood processing machine, various medical equipment, and injection mold machines. Potentiometers are preferred devices for user controls.
Thomas Edison is credited as the inventor of carbon potentiometer, which is what is popularly used nowadays. He called the device a coiled resistance wire rheostat.
Types of Potentiometers
Potentiometers are categorized into two major types: linear and rotary.
- Linear potentiometers are also called faders or sliders. There potentiometers have pins attached to adjustable sliders. The two leads are connected to the resistor ends, enabling fixed resistance. Varying resistance is produced by the third lead, which is attached to a slider traveling through the resistor. Linear potentiometers are visually intuitive, and this makes them the ideal choice for graphic equalizers and soundboards.
- Rotary potentiometers are typically utilized for audio systems signal, volume levels, and audio devices that produce a live effect or sound, like electric musical instruments. These potentiometers have dials or knobs that allow their wipers to move in a circle. It has dual pins attached to resistive elements that are arranged in semi-circle. Its third pin or lead is attached to a rotating knob, which help create a linear output.
