Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors, also known as tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are a specific type of electrolytic capacitors. Their anode is a tantalum metal protected with an oxide covering. This layer of oxide functions as the dielectric and is surrounded by the cathode, which can either be a non-solid or solid electrolyte. These capacitors have thin dielectric layers, which is why they are lightweight and have high capacitance or high volumetric efficiency.

These electrolytic capacitors are inherently polarized, so they need two polarized capacitors to create a bipolar or non-polarized tantalum capacitor. Users need to remember that reverse voltage is capable of destroying the capacitor.

Tantalum capacitors combine several other factors aside from the tantalum dielectric, including thin dielectric thickness and large plate area. These capacitors may not be as robust as other capacitors, but their performance and size make up for this. These make them popular choices for several applications. In addition, most of those who use tantalum capacitors prefer utilizing the surface mount formats as these add to the durability, allowing the capacitors to endure the soldering process.

Tantalum capacitors have low equivalent series resistance or ESR, specifically when compared with aluminum electrolytic. They also have lower leakage and better operating temperature capability.

Common characteristics of tantalum capacitors are high accuracy, high temperature resistance, excellent high frequency wave-changing and filtering performance, durability, and long life. They also have self-healing capabilities.

Types

There are three main types of tantalum capacitors: tantalum chip capacitors, axial leaded tantalum capacitors, and tantalum pearls capacitors.

  • Tantalum chip capacitors are the most used and common type of tantalum capacitors. These are used for surface mounting.
  • Axial leaded tantalum capacitors are non-solid and tangible. They are typically utilized in space, medical, and military applications.
  • Tantalum pearls capacitors immersed in resin and intended for printed circuit board or PBC mounting.
