Polymer Capacitors
Polymer capacitors, also known as polymer electrolytic capacitors, are capacitors that employ conductive polymers as the electrolyte. Instead of using gel or liquid electrolytes, these capacitors use solid ones, which mean they effectively prevent electrolyte aging or drying and thus extend their lifetime. Polymer capacitors are popular because of their reliability, high capacitance (despite their small package), no dry-out behavior, and long life. In addition, they are also highly functional to many applications. There are certain characteristics that set polymer capacitors apart from ordinary electrolyte capacitors: high ripple current capability, higher maximum working temperature, lower ESR or equivalent series resistance, capability to eliminate ceramic capacitor-related acoustic noise, more efficient failure mode, and better stability. Types
Polymer capacitor has four types: Polymer Ta-e-cap, Polymer Al-e-cap, Hybrid Polymer Al-e-cap or Hybrid Polymer Capacitor, and Polymer Aluminum Multilayer Capacitors.
- Polymer Ta-e-caps - rectangular SMDs or surface-mounted devices and are cost-efficient, particularly when compared to traditional tantalum capacitors. These polymer capacitors have high volumetric efficiency even if their voltage de-rating is lower. Moreover, Polymer tantalum electrolytic capacitors also boast of high ripple current ratings.
- Polymer Al-e-caps - offered in three styles: cylindrical SMDs, single-ended or radial leaded, and rectangular SMD chip style. These polymer capacitors may be equipped with lower capacitance per unit volume, but their low ESR, durability, and long operating life are more than enough to make up for it.
- Hybrid Polymer Al-e-caps, also known as polymer hybrid capacitors, combines the strongest characteristics of conductive polymer components and aluminum electrolytes, like long operating life, high ripple current rating, low ESR, and low leakage current.
- Polymer Aluminum Multilayer Capacitors have very low ESR and very high ripple currents, with ratings exceeding 7A in several types.
