Optoelectronics & Displays

Alternatively known as optronics, optoelectronics refers to the application, study, and technology of electronic devices that control, detect, source, and interact with light. These lights are often within the ultraviolet, infrared, or visible spectral region. Optoelectronic devices work as electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducers. They react to optical power and optical radiation. Optoelectronics is used in different applications and industries, including optical metrology, laser technology, and optical fiber communications.

Types of Optoelectronics

Here are some of the most popular types of optoelectronics devices:

  • LEDs (light-emitting diodes) – semiconductor diodes that produce electroluminescence. Compared to traditional incandescent lamps, they are more energy-efficient because they consume less power and produce less heat.
  • Photovoltaics, also known as solar cells – these devices convert energy from the sun into electricity. Solar cells are commonly used for rural electrification, ocean navigation, and telecommunication systems, among others.
  • Encoder sensor integrated circuits (ICs) are SoC or system-on-chip integrated circuit sensors that are typically used in motion control systems as feedback to the controller. They are essential for transforming linear or rotary motions to electrical signals.
  • Photoresistors are utilized for light-sensitive switching devices. They are LDRs (light-dependent resistors) or light-controlled variable resistors that produce very high resistance when placed in a very dark environment. Their resistance is reduced when lighted or illuminated.
  • Optical fibers are vital components of fiber lasers, bio medicals, telecommunications, and sensors. These devices use modulated light to transfer data.
  • Laser diodes are alternatively called Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting LASER or VCSEL. These semiconductors are capable of transforming electricity into a light energy. Laser diodes are typically utilized for CD players, long-distance communication, surgical procedures, and military applications.

Optoisolators, photonic integrated circuits, electro-optic modulators, superluminiscent diodes, photoemissive detectors, photodetectors, and electroabsorption modulators are other examples of optoelectronic devices.
