Crystals

Crystals are piezoelectric devices that rely on mechanical resonance to get accurate frequency output. They are passive components that produce electrical signals. Crystals act as FDC or frequency-determining component. It is used for monitoring time (i.e. quartz watches). Every year, over two billion crystals are produced for a variety of purposes – for radios, clocks, cellphones, computers, and of course, wristwatches. The most common crystal is the quartz crystal.

Quartz Crystal

Known as silicon diode’s crystalline form (they are made of oxygen and silicon atoms), the quartz crystal is commonly found in electronic products that need high-performing resonators. It is one of Earth’s most abundant minerals.

Quartz’s melting point is over 1700°C. Its Curie temperature is around 573°C. It has a piezoelectric effect, which is what makes it useful for electronic circuits. What makes the quartz crystal absolutely unique is that it has both mechanical resonance and piezoelectric effect.

Aside from its physical attributes (hexagonal cross-section and six-sided pyramid-like ends), a quartz crystal also has other key properties.

  • It is anisotropic, which means one quartz crystal has several values when it’s measured along axes that are in different directions. More specifically, quartz exhibits optical and light anisotropy.
  • It is enantiomorphous, which means that there are left and right-handed quartz versions. The right-handed ones are commonly utilized for manufacturing resonators.

Piezoelectric Effect

Quartz crystals have many uses; some people even use it for making jewelry. However, its piezoelectric effect is its most useful component. Quartz crystals are vital in electronic circuits and RF (radio frequency) designs. This effect is reversible. This effect borrows its meaning from Greek words “piezein” and “piezo” which mean press and push, respectively. Some application for the piezoelectric effect as mentioned in the introduction include noise detection, fine tuning optical, high voltage generation and electronic frequency and microbalances.
