Audio / Video

Audio/Video (AV) devices are electronic components equipped with two elements: sound and video. AV also refers to a storage format for various media, specifically moving pictures and sound. Various sectors and industries benefit from audio/video technology, especially at a time when virtual conferences and online classrooms are the new normal. Before we talk more about the science behind audio/visual, this category covers the following products: antennas, home A/V, Pro audio, A/V distribution and Speakers.

Digital audio and video recordings are common in A/V technology. Also called audio and video codecs, these recordings can be

  • lossy-compressed (their file size is reduced and their image quality is decreased),
  • lossless compressed (their file size is reduced but the image quality is the same), or
  • uncompressed (no compression is applied and quality is not degraded).

Audio Codecs

Audio codecs have three types: mono (with only one audio channel), stereo (with two channels), and many channels (example: surround sound audio systems or 5.1).

Video Codecs

Video codecs are made up of frames arranged in sequence. Factors like resolution, color space, and number of frames per second (fps) affect the video quality.

Audio/Visual Classification According to Purpose

Audio/Visual components are classified according to their purpose. There are two primary categories: commercial and residential.

  1. Commercial A/V (a.k.a. business audio visual) is intended for professional and business users. Consultants, technology managers, dealers, manufacturers, programmers, systems integrators, and presentation managers are only some of those who benefit from commercial audio video devices.

These devices are popular among sectors and industries that engage on collaborative conferencing, i.e. audio conferencing, video conferencing, data conferencing, and web conferencing. Other uses for commercial A/V are for digital signage, lecture halls, auditoriums, presentation rooms, and command & control centers.
  2. Residential A/V refers to audio and video devices that are used in homes or for residential purposes. Some examples are projectors, LED TVs, TV mounts or stands, antennas, and in-ceiling speakers. There are homes with cinema or movie rooms that are surrounded by state-of-the-art residential audio video technologies.
