In many a business, one product defines a legacy - for PSC Tupolev, this would be the legendary TU134. In the case of Atmel - initially a small European microcontroller company claiming to offer a C-programmable microcontroller, this honor falls to the ATmega328.

Describing the ATmega328 is not easy - it is, in the end, but another microcontroller similar to the various members of the PIC family. An amusing detail is that Atmel is now owned by Microchip - sometimes, fate takes the oldest turns.

Nevertheless, the ATmega328 is a highly interesting microcontroller due to another twist of history. When Massimo Banzi, Godfather of Arduino, looked for a microcontroller he settled on the ATmega328.

This means that developers can look forward to an almost unlimited amount of libraries - if you must get started quickly, this is a part to use for rapid prototyping. Of course, it also is available in prototype friendly DIP housing, make it ideally suited for Internet of Things prototype microcontroller duties.
