If an AC/DC power supply is required, purchasing a ready-made module is almost always the most commercially prudent way. With the TXO 45, Traco Power provides a ready-to-go module with attractive additional capabilities.

AC/DC power supplies are among the most ubiquitous components known to man - few devices can make do without them. The regulatory environment makes rolling your own designs interesting. With the TXO 45, Traco Power provides certification in accordance with the following standards right out of the box:

x) EN 62368-1

x) IEC 62368-1

x) UL 62368-1

45 Watts and Four Different Voltage Levels

As of this writing, Traco Power offers four different SKUs in the TXO 45 line. All of them have a maximum output power of 45 watts and achieve an output efficiency of about 85%.

In terms of voltages, SKU TXO 45-112-J yields a 12 V model. SKU TXO 45-148-J yields a 48 V model, while the SKUs TXO 45-115-J and TXO 45-124-J supply output voltages of 15 or 24 V.

In all cases, ripple and noise are kept in check. When paired with two small capacitors, the family\'s datasheet promises the values shown below.

The classic switch-mode power supply problem of a required minimum load is not present on the TXO 45. Thanks to their advanced internal construction, the power supplies are able to regulate reliably when connected to nothing except a high-impedence multimeter or oscilloscope probe. Finally, the products are protected against short-circuiting and output current overload.

Flexible Mechanical Environment

The power supply is usually connected to the application circuit via the connectors shown in the figure below.

The first connector, labeled CN1, is required to supply the line voltage. The application's output power is then available for harvesting via CN2.

In both cases, a Japan Solderless Terminal connector is used - in particular, the SKUs B3P-VH(LF)(SN)) and B4P-VH(LF)(SN)), which can be mated with a wide variety of crimp terminals. Traco Power provides the SKUs TCI 130-DC and TCI-AC1 if a pre-crimped cable is preferable.

Furthermore, circuit designers working on international equipment will be delighted to find out that an AC-level switch is not required. The TXO 45 series can work with voltage levels ranging from 85 to 264 VAC and can detect and adjust operation mode automatically. This means that these AC/DC industrial power supplies can be used internationally without any configuration.

In terms of ambient resistance, Traco promises an operating temperature range from -20 to +70°C; this performance is achieved purely using convection cooling. No fan is required, which simplifies both the mechanical case design and the bill of materials of the final application.

Conclusion

If a small device requires an AC/DC power supply, Traco Power's TXO 45 series is ideally suited. Thanks to its compliance with a wide variety of regulatory standards, the products can be deployed in regulation-sensitive markets.
